2018 Vauxhall Grandland X Blue Color SUV Dimensions

After the Crossland X, Vauxhall is now bringing the grand land The is based on the Peugeot 3008, but makes a lot different. First ride in the compact SUV.

Darmstadt – Who needs you, the whole new SUV? Whether the car manufacturers are a bit of a debt to the “City of Geländewagen”? Attractive new models without increased ground clearance and large tires are scarce at least at the still running IAA. When manufacturers expand their assortment, then in the segment of the SUV.

This also applies to Vauxhall in the case of the grandland X. A compact SUV was no longer in the range of the Rüsselsheimer after the quiet end of the Vauxhall-Tara for two years. With the new model, growth is therefore inevitable. For whom is the new Vauxhall, and: Is it possible to differentiate between the parallel-developed sister model Peugeot 3008?

At first glance Yes. Compared to the smart-futuristic Frenchman, the Vauxhall looks classic and elegant. The same-part strategy is limited to non-visible parts. This also applies to the interior and here especially for the cockpit: The built-in materials clearly remind of other Vauxhall models, with underlining and rubberized dashboard and many upholstery inserts. The processing works well at first glance, only on the armrest in the front doors, the parts do not mesh perfectly. Everything else sits firmly and looks solid and elegant.

The cockpit clearly bears the Rüsselsheim handwriting. The clear layout of the operating elements is known from Astra or insignia, driver and passenger sitting on the Vauxhall-typical Ergonomiesitzen. They feel taut, pleasantly wide and are of course adjustable in many ways.

Interior: Spacious and well-tuned

In the room offer, the siblings approach. The French EMP2 platform allows for short overhangs and, therefore, with compact dimensions, a spacious interior, in which you can withstand longer distances in any place. Behind it are 514 liters of the trunk. A maximum of 1,652 litres of cargo fit into the back bench. A moveable backbench does not offer Vauxhall, unlike in the smaller cross-district X. Clear case: The Vauxhall is more about emotion, and the focus is less on absolute expediency.

Steering and suspension, says Vauxhall, have been carefully adapted to your own style. However, the difference to the French brother is not so great. Peugeot has been striving for precise steering and dynamic driving behavior for a number of years. The hammock is in charge of the PSA group Citroën.

When maneuvering in the narrow city, the great steering impact of the Vauxhall GrandLand X is striking, which makes it much easier to manoeuvre in a tight space. The turning circle according to datasheet: 11.05 meters.

Fuel Economical, quiet engines

We drive the Grandland X with diesel and automatic (120 hp) as well as with petrol and manual circuit (130 hp). Both turbo engines offer early enough torque for speedy swimming on the highway, but both pull a little tough with overtaking manoeuvres. And: Both convince with a pleasant noise. Although the 1.2-l three-cylinder gasoline engine does not deny its construction. In the tough Hessian cross-country traffic, the on-board computer in the diesel with automatic showed an average consumption of 5.4 liters to 100 kilometers, while petrol was 5.9 liters.

The only minimum consumption advantage of the diesel makes the cheaper gasoline overall a recommendation. With 80 kilos less empty weight, the Dreizylindrige 2018 Vauxhall Grandland X feels tighter and slightly footed. Rolling noises can be heard clearly at 150 km/h, but wind noise remains largely outside – despite the high level of construction. Not only in noise, in general, the Grandland X driving behavior that many other SUV of this size class shows. He almost drives as if he were not an SUV, but rather an Astra.

This is, as well as the moderate consumption, probably for the good part at the relatively low weight of 1,350 kilos. And the very successful vote. Taut, but not hard – sufficiently comfortable, but not soft.

A large diesel Engine

The fact that the grand is an SUV is the high seat position and the neat overview. And in fast-driven corners, an Astra remains more stable. Like Peugeot at the 3008, Vauxhall renounces a four-wheel version of the Grandland Here as there must be a separate control for the ESP range. At Peugeot, it is called grip control, at Vauxhall Intelligrip.

At the start, Vauxhall offers only the engines of our test cars: a 1.2-l turbo Petrol (130 hp) and a 1.6-l turbo Diesel (120 hp), each coupled to a manual six-speed gearbox or a six-step automatic. Short View next door: Peugeot also offers a 1.6-l gasoline engine with 165 hp and a 2.0-l diesel with 150 or 180 hp in the 3008.

Vauxhall has scheduled the 180 hp diesel. The large motor from the PSA shelf should be available at the beginning of 2018, coupled to an eight-aisle automatic. Engines below 120 HP will then also offer Vauxhall in the grandland X. Electric drives are in a somewhat distant future: The Grandland X is to become the first Vauxhall model with a plug-in hybrid drive. As the electric motor in the PSA strand drives the rear axle, then the four-wheel drive is also given. PSA plans a system performance of around 300 hp. Vauxhall is not expected to offer the technology before 2019.

What many motor-talkers are interested in: When will Vauxhall deliver its direct injection gasoline with particulate filter? The standard Euro 6c makes the additional filter from September 2018 necessary for many engines. Vauxhall intends to introduce the Abgasreinigungs system “successively from April” into the model range. When in which model, there is no statement yet.

Prices and equipment

Vauxhall sees in the Grandland X an SUV for rather younger, urban living customers – like with children, not with extreme space requirements. They can add a lot of classes of standard comfort features: Front and rear seat heating, heated windshield, service OnStar, various extension stages of parking aid.

The prices for the 2018 Vauxhall Grandad x start at 23,700 Euro for the time being. In this case, there is a buyable car: In the base, the Opel brings an air conditioning system, a USB radio, traffic sign detection, mountain Driving assistant and Lane holding assistant. However, some useful extras are only available from the second level: AFL-led with five light modes costs 1,250 euro, an adaptive cruise control with stop function (only for diesel with automatic) 800 euro. If you want to have the full parking assistance program with reversing camera, 360-degree-look and Automatic Park assistant, you can spend more than 2,000 euros. Two Ergonomiesitze cost 685 euros, a panoramic roof 700 euro.

The price design places the 2018 Vauxhall Grandland X in the middle of the field of compact SUV with front drive. A Ford Kuga with 120 horsepower starts at 23,300 euros. The Peugeot 3008, built in the same factory as the Vauxhall, is practically the same. A Mazda CX-5 is 165 ps costs from 24,990 euros. The VW Tiguan: the 1.4 TSI Trendline (125 PS) starts at 26,575 euros.

The most advantageous offer is not necessarily the Grandland First of all, not looking at Nissan Qashqai or Renault Kadjar, which both start under 20,000 euros. Vauxhall will probably also attack this segment with future smaller engines.

Bottom line: The bill will go up for Vauxhall. Sure, the Petrolhead wants more exciting engines, the terrain-Purist 4WD and less SUV attitude. However, as a number of pieces, Vauxhall covers the slack. The compact Vauxhall SUV offers modern wizards and connectivity, lots of space and economical engines. The plus of style and agility compared to the indirect predecessor, and much less eccentricity than the technical brother Peugeot 3008, should be enough to find the Vauxhall’s place in the competitive compact SUV market.
