2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Preview; Price, Interior & Exterior Redesign
2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid is A reasonably thick SUV with a gentle hybrid drive-is that a contradiction or a wonderful symbiosis? The result is certainly worth a second look.
The latest hybrid in the program runs better and quieter than the small and compact in front of it. Not quite as it is told by television commissioners in advertising. But the right foot now has a much better speed. And not just the noise.
Nevertheless, if you want to enjoy the 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, you should at least be able to drive Prius. Adrenaline is somewhere else, here governs sensitive electronics. Gentle, with emotion – and suddenly the RAV4 hybrid begins to conjure and seduce. Inimitably comfortable, quiet and flowing. Only a Kickdown drives the Atkinson engine into indecently high speeds. Then it’s over with the rest. So far, so hybrid, and known since the first Prius.
Toyota introduces the hybrid drive to the facelift of the RAV4. The compact SUV gets the Mickey Mouse nose, pardon, the brand face of his siblings. Add to this a stiffer body, a tighter chassis, better sound insulation, finer materials and new assistants. The advantages of the RAV4 do not change: clear body, lots of space in front and back and in the trunk. A solid family castle.
2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Engine Specs, Gas Mileage
But how does the hybrid drive fit into this car? It initially increases the weight of the already non-lightweight RAV4 to more than 1.6 tonnes. The trunk volume drops from 547 to 501 liters. No good conditions. That’s why Toyota attacked the big deal: instead of the small Prius machine, the Lexus-known gasoline engine has a capacity of 2.5 liters and 155 hp. The system power of the drive is 197 HP – This is sufficient for speedy traffic lights or tempo 100 after 8.3 seconds. Toyota replaced the well-known Bergabfahr mode with six simulated transmission stages. This can be used to control the strength of the recuperation.
All this does not feel athletic in the RAV4, but also not sluggish. The direct steering and the good brakes let the high weight forget. The old Prius wisdom applies to consumption: the hybrid educates the driver. At city speed and without gradients, the standard consumption of 4.9 liters to 100 kilometers can be easily under-offered. Those who enter the RAV4 frantically will pay for it at the petrol station.
Positive: The noise level of the concept due to the high current Atkinson engine has significantly reduced Toyota. The typical sawtooth can be heard practically only at full throttle, but no longer at a constant motorway ride. This makes it easy to live, and it also contributes to education – too often you don’t want to hear it. It is much more pleasant to leave the command to the adaptive distance cruise on longer stages and to run a quiet conversation at Tempo 140.
Please, do not buy diesel
If you absolutely want, you can buy the 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid with a diesel engine. But then without all-wheel or automatic – both are no longer at the self-igniter. Instead, the Toyota RAV4 is the first hybrid in Germany that is allowed to draw a serious trailer and is optionally offered with four-wheel drive. For this purpose, the Japanese install an additional electric motor with 50 kw on the rear axle, which switches on as needed. The system performance does not increase this because the engine takes its energy directly from the main drive.
RAV4 prospective customers will hardly pass the hybrid in the future. It is the strongest motorization, but it costs (with front-wheel drive) even 300 euros less than a petrol engine with automatic and 4WD. Or 1,200 euros more than a diesel with manual switch and poorer equipment. The assistant package “safety sense” also costs less in the hybrid 550 euros than in petrol or diesel.
However, in the competition, pure burners cost a little less: the 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, for example, is over the Hyundai Tucson (177 hp, with double clutch gearbox). At Mazda, there is the CX-5 with 160 hp, 4WD and automatic around 1,800 euros cheaper than the Toyota. But then there is no hybrid drive – and its characteristics, that has shown this ride, can also make an SUV absolutely worth it. Even if not for everyone.
