German Brand builds the 2019 Mercedes Sprinter again without VW, but with a few parts from the car kit. And: With a lot of internet on board. First pictures from the cockpit.
Stuttgart – Strategies need a name. Happy with wordplay: The commercial vehicle division of Mercedes-Benz has dubbed its initiative for the future 2016 on the name “adVANce”. Logically, that Vans like the Vito and the Sprinter play a major role. After the recent electric eVito, Daimler now gives another look at the upcoming Mercedes Sprinter.
The first pictures of the interior do not show a thoroughly modernized workplace and a close proximity to the car segment. Mercedes sets in the upcoming Sprinter (from 2018) a large control panel on the dashboard. This is reminiscent of the widescreen E- and S-Class. However, without the fully digital instrument carrier. The speedometer still sits with analog round instruments clearly separated next to it.
The designers are integrating further acquaintances into the dashboard: The turbine air vents were thus used for the first time in the E-Class Coupé and will in future be included in most Mercedes models. The CLS has them, the upcoming A-class still gets them. In the Sprinter, they have their first job.
2019 Mercedes Sprinter Interior
From the upper class comes the new Sprinter steering wheel. Mercedes rolls it since the facelift in the S-class steadily in the smaller cars. And with the Sprinter now also in the larger ones. All functions, including the cruise control, sit in the spokes. There are touchpads for the thumbs.
Of course, this does not come for free in the car. The basic version is barely there. Without the patch display, but with a lot of sturdy plastic and two knobs for heating. In total, there are four cockpit upgrades with different storage concepts. Mercedes offers either open, closed or lockable compartments in the headliner and cockpit.
The connection to in-house kits does not surprise. So far, Daimler had worked with the Sprinter with Volkswagen to keep development and production costs down. The upcoming generation of the 2019 Mercedes Sprinter will again be a pure Mercedes development. Volkswagen has already reissued the Crafter.
2019 Mercedes Sprinter Engine Specs
This applies to the engines anyway and also in the current generation. The most important engine in the Sprinter is likely to be the new 2.0-liter diesel OM654. It replaces the old 2.16-liter OM651 engine. Whether there will still be 6-cylinder remains to be seen. Nominally OM 654 has sufficient power and torque to replace the current V6 diesel. It is also clear that the upcoming Sprinter will come from 2019 as the Sprinter with electric drive.
In addition, there is the first time a Sprinter with front-wheel drive. As a result, the cargo space grows because the loading floor can be lowered by eight centimeters. Alternatively, find passengers more headroom, after all, there is the refreshed Sprinter. Overall, there are the Sprinter in about 1,000 different configurations.
Now “adVANce” would not be a very comprehensive strategy, if the Sprinter would notice only by a new interior and new engines. Mercedes-Benz Vans promises that the third-generation Sprinter will be transformed from a “pure vehicle to a complete system solution”. Networking and digitization are the keywords. In other words, the Sprinter has integrated the hardware for Internet connection into the vehicle infrastructure. In this country, even the basic models are delivered with the interface.
Logistics and delivery companies should be able to integrate their 2019 Mercedes Sprinter fleet into their own IT infrastructure. This is how the fleet should be used more efficiently. Mercedes calls this “Pro connect”. The service allows, for example, the query of the current tank level or the next oil change and upcoming inspection dates. In addition, the dispatcher can assign vehicles to individual drivers who can open the car via app – without first having to pick up the key in the office. That saves time. And that’s just money in logistics.
