2018 Ssangyong Rexton Review; Engine Performance, Interior
Everything is new to the 2018 Ssangyong Rexton: the SUV will be bigger, nobler and of course more modern in the new generation. However, the price also rises. First test.
He looked a bit like a relic from the early 2000s, the Ssangyong Rexton. Was he too? What was sold in this country since 2012 as Rexton W, was a facelift of Rexton built since 2001? After all, the smallest Korean manufacturer Ssangyong had recently renounced the very Mercedes-inspired grille.
Now the SUV specialists bring a completely new model. The new Rexton has grown by 8.5 centimeters in length, to 4.85 meters. The shapes have become softer, the proportions are harmonious. At least to the rear triangle window. Behind it, the Rexton may seem a bit overweight. At 1.96 meters wide and 1.83 meters high, the SUV is in moderation on BMW X5 or Mercedes GLE level.
In the interior, Ssangyong offers leatherette and quilted Nappa leather. Chrome and high gloss applications adorn the dashboard. Not so bad. The infotainment is operated via an 8 or 9.2-inch touchscreen. The materials are neatly processed and beautifully arranged. In any case, in the well-tested test car we tested.
The new Rexton costs at least 30,990 euros. That’s about 3,000 euros more than the previous entry price. For this you get a five-seater with rear-wheel drive and six-speed gearbox. The variant with four-wheel drive and seven-speed automatic will be more popular, it costs at least 35,490 euros. Who chooses the top equipment Sapphire, is from 39.190 euros here. Nappa leather costs 2,000 euros extra. Overall, the Rexton thus remains cheaper than competitors such as the Hyundai Santa Fe.
And he offers more space. Rear seat passengers in comfortable and well-padded seats with plenty of freedom for the legs. The head does not bump even tall people. The rear door opens wide and gives a generous cut-out. On request, the Rexton with two additional seats (800 euros) to have. Adults are no longer comfortable there, the storage space is shrinking significantly.
The Rexton holds a maximum of 1,977 liters of luggage, the loading sill is pleasantly low, the tailgate is a good size, the hooks for shopping bags and the 220V socket are practical. In the five-seater fit in upright rear seat 820 liters, the second row of seats work in the ratio 60:40. If only the backs are turned over, however, a striking step arises. The various storage compartments, cup holders, and side compartments in the doors offer ample space. The infotainment dominates Apple CarPlay and Android, a USB port is also available.
The 2018 Ssangyong Rexton is powered by a 2.2-liter diesel, which increases by 3 hp with 181 hp. As standard, the power is transmitted to the rear axle via a six-speed gearbox. The consumption by the standard is 7.6 liters. 8.1 liters are the manufacturer for the variant with the Mercedes supplied seven-speed automatic transmission (plus 2,500 euros) and all-wheel drive (plus 2,000 euros). The switches in Rexton, however, quite sluggish. Really good: The Rexton can pull up to 3.5 tons.
The diesel is powerful and has no trouble with the SUV. Compared to its predecessor, it is also acoustically pleasant back: Ssangyong insulates the new 2018 Ssangyong Rexton much better than before. The chassis is designed more for comfort, rough edges and potholes are filtered only in the interior. Fast lane changes, evasive maneuvers and winding country roads like the Rexton but not. Then he gets rocking, and the body tilts noticeably.
More safety is provided by emergency brake, lane keeping and main beam assistants, which Ssangyong installs as standard. With a reason for the increased base price. A traffic sign recognition is also available ex-works. And: Ssangyong gives a five-year warranty on its models. A decent offer so – if a lot of space and a lot of torque in the car search in the foreground. A problem: At present, the distribution of the brand in Europe is still rather low, even if the owner Mahindra has invested a lot and pushed in.
