2018 VW Crafter Dimensions
The individual cabin is available in lengths of 5.9 meters, 6.8 meters, and 7.4 meters. With a double cabin and up to seven seats, the longest variant is omitted. In general, those who already have Fastfoodtheke decision-making difficulties have to plan the Crafterkauf time.
Especially if it is to be the classic Van variant: Which comes in the mentioned lengths as well as optionally with 2.3 meters, 2.6 meters or 2.8 meters vehicle height. Mud, tight sweep, against traffic, and all this with a 6.8-meter long flatbed truck with front drive. The time is also pressing. Sure, that’s stressful. But it’s a good test for the crafter for the rough. When it becomes difficult, the rider has the greatest strength: he feels very close to the car. The height of the chairs, the lack of sound insulation with the audible rattling of the diesel-all this cries out: Commercial vehicle!
But the seat position is countered: a normal Volkswagen. You sit behind the steering wheel, not about it. and develops quite soon a sense of where the Colossus ends. Even in the rear, if the loading side is positioned and visible. With the classic box trolley, it is exciting without the camera and sensors.
The two-wheeler-driven crafter handles the softened gravel path without any problems. At some point, the desired area is there. Quite soon the lonely, flat roads of the Burgenland begin. And somehow the crafter is here-yikes-even fun. Of course, the steering could be more direct, clearly, the vehicle bends in front, feels at the rear axle with leaf springs, a lot of angular. But for a commercial vehicle with a high priority, this is absolutely fine.
Crafter Engine Specs: four diesel and 200 currents
Volkswagen currently offers only 2.0-liter diesel engines in the 2018 VW Crafter. The electric version was shown at the IAA only comes in a small series of around 200 vehicles. For the racers, a 102-PS engine, as well as a 122-PS unit, are the starting point. More often customers will choose stronger variants: 140 PS or 177 PS, there is nothing more.
I try both: the difference is less in practice than the data sheets suggest. Both feel most comfortable in the range between 2,000 and about 3,300 turns. If you are really serious about loading and towing, you should still be Top Engine.
The smaller crafter variants, however, could get along with 140 horsepower. In any case, whoever enters the Crafter has to reckon with consumption in the range of the 9 liters. The 6.7 liters for the Top Enginebandied require a Zen master on the accelerator and after yawning emptiness on the loading surface. Even if Volkswagen has put a lot of emphasis on aerodynamics in development: The crafter remains a box wagon.
And he remains a worker. According to to-the interior, although not uncouth. The dashboard and the side panel made of hard plastic work solidly. Nothing rattles, nothing is after. Comfort Yes, luxury No. It would be desirable to have non-slip material in the numerous storage areas. And in the Double cabin variant: good friends as seat neighbors.
Or colleagues on diet: with four seats in a row it can be quite tight. Most crafters are probably ordered with three chairs in the front row. Optional vibrating seats with the EGR certificate (“Healthy Back Action”) are available here. Perfect if the ride leads to the construction site via potholes. Otherwise: A taste of whether you would like to get a little truck and bus feeling in the nearby van.
Converter instead of DSG
The real revolutions often happen unnoticed. To date, Volkswagen has been the European market: in an engine model without a clutch pedal, there is a double clutch gearbox. Converter machines are only available for longitudinal engine-and this was only true for VW on the Touareg.
Since the Crafter has concluded: front-driven (and engine-seated) Crafter can be ordered with an eight-speed Wandlerautomatik, in future, the gearbox will be used in further engine and drive variants. Why does Volkswagen dispense with the DSG? The automatic converter has evolved, it is said succinctly. In addition, there would be less experience in the DSG in the commercial vehicle sector, explained the commercial vehicle technicians. In the test, the automatic does not have any serious weaknesses. However, when the power is switched on, it feels slightly more powerful than a double-clutch gearbox.
Crafter with all drive variants
Nevertheless, VW is highlighting the eight conditions as a unique selling point in the commercial vehicle sector. In a double clutch transmission, eight gears would have been more difficult to achieve. On the other hand, the vehicle has its USP regardless of the gearbox. It is available in all drive variants – that is, in addition to front-wheel drive also with rear or four-wheel drive. (in rear-wheel-driven VW Crafter, the engine is built in length.)
The Ford Transit can do so, but not in the elongated variants. The 2018 VW crafter I closely related to the Mercedes Sprinter was not available with front-wheel drive. Volkswagen is less concerned with the technical finger exercise than market segmentation: the front-drive Crafter is the space King in the portfolio and offers at the back the most place and a 15 centimeter lower loading. The rear-wheel drive is intended to appeal to customers who prefer to load rather than invite a lot: The longest version with twin tires on the rear axle is allowed to total weight of up to 5,000 kilograms. With so much load in the rear, the front drive would have long been traction problems. On the Hecktriebler, the lower turning circle also appeals to the car. Finally, the engineers did not have to think about front drive shafts at the maximum permissible steering impact.
There were surprises on the ride. Even if you want to annoy the rear axle on wet roadways a little: the length runs smoothly – and between the front and rear wheel hubs lie up to 4.5 meters. The four-wheel crafter is intended to appeal to agricultural and forestry enterprises. In mountainous regions and high altitudes, the largest share is likely to fall on the 4-motion. Volkswagen is counting on the total market with about 50 percent of the front drive variants sold.
