2018 VW Polo Review

Finally, downsizing is the end: VW is building a serious powertrain in the 2018 VW Polo. With 200 hp pushes the little biter even behind the golf.

To understand the new 2018 VW Polo GTI you have to know its predecessor. Because with him VW handles neatly beside it. First a small engine with big problems blew its reputation. Then came a stable drive, but a weak gearbox. VW throttled the torque of the gasoline engine in order not to overwhelm the ControlBox.

In the new 2018 VW Polo GTI everything will be better. Well, almost everything – there are little things to complain about. But the overall picture is right. Because the small car gets an engine that has been operating smoothly in the Golf GTI for years. And a gearbox that will withstand the power.

2018 VW Polo Specs and Price

A sturdy, powerful runabout. 200 hp and 320 Newton meter strong, 237 km/h fast, in 6.7 seconds on tempo 100. A Golf 6 GTI (211 hp) does not drive away from it, the current version (230 hp) holds little advantage. Great, especially since the Polo GTI with double clutch transmission costs 23,950 euro. The Big Brother is almost 8,500 euros more expensive.

The polo has grown in generation 6. Only about 20 centimeters are missing on the gulf in length. It gets a little tighter on the back seat and in the trunk. Especially in sports mode, the GTI is like. Tight curves and load changes lie to him, he wobbles nimbly through the sweeps and pulls himself vigorously back to speed. In 2018 VW Polo, a software brakes the curved inner wheel.

In everyday mode, the polo relaxes. Then he rolls less tightly over the asphalt, almost quietly. There remains a small residual nervousness in the undercarriage. Finally, they also exist in the series polo. For this, it reduces the weight in the steering and the sound from the engine compartment.

Only the double clutch gearbox does not fit into the overall picture of the polo. Not because it has structural weaknesses in creep operation. But because VW actually retired this version. In the polo, there is a six-DQ250 DSG with two clutches in an oil bath. In many new models it has long since been replaced by the successor “DQ381” with seven gears. VW just says this gear would be best suited to the car.

In any case, the GTI sign fits on this 2018 VW Polo. Maybe even better than the golf, because the polo is more compact, lighter and much cheaper. If he is successful, VW may also have as much effort in the small as in the original GTI. Because the engine creates much more than 200 horsepower.
