BMW’s motorcycle short “RT” will be 40 this year. Around 200,000 machines left the factory to date. The 2019 BMW R 1250 RT takes BMW to a new level.
Since 1978, the abbreviation RT has been part of the BMW model range. It stands for Reisetourer and referred from the beginning to large touring machines with lush, comfortable disguise. Best wind and weather protection and the highest possible driving comfort should offer the once 50-hp R 80 RT as well as recently the bulky R 1200 RT with 125 hp.
After nearly 200,000 built RTs, the R 1250 RT (starting at 18,000 euros) is now scaling up to a new level of performance and comfort: the boxer engine, which has been increased from 1,170 to 1,254 cubic centimeters and boosted by a variable intake control, generates 136 hp. But even the optional electronic chassis – equipment ratio last practically 100 percent – offers more driving and operating comfort than before.
ShiftCam variable intake manifold control improves combustion in the partial load range and increases gas exchange in the combustion chamber at full load. Together with the increase in displacement of a good 80 cubic centimeters, on the one hand, the performance increases. But more important is the added torque: from 125 Nm 143.

Over the entire speed range, there is a noticeable increase in power, which has a positive effect all around. At low speeds, the boxer engine runs even more gentle and moves through more confidently, beyond half throttle fires the flat twin unrestrained and flits without any apparent inhibitions up to 8,500 tours.
The secret lies in the use of differently profiled cams that are used at partial or full load. An actuator ensures change within a few milliseconds. “Full power” is basically above 5,000 rpm announced, but also significantly lower, if the throttle valves are wide open.
The higher quality of the combustion leads to cleaner exhaust gases and lower consumption. The latter is supported in practice by a less “gaseous” driving style because the engine delivers consistently more power to the rear wheel. You drive more relaxed and smooth. Consumption values of less than five liters per 100 kilometers are possible without difficulty. Which means almost 450 kilometers of the practice range. The 2019 BMW R 1250 RT is also an excellent travel tourer from this point of view.
This applies for at least two RT generations as well for the chassis with front Telelever, so strut and wishbone, and the rear Paralever. The responsiveness of suspension and damping is close to the perfection limit since the introduction of the still subject to the surcharge, but presumably, 99.99 percent of all customers like to order semi-active suspension system Dynamic ESA.
Whether on moderate or good asphalt: The driver thinks and the 279 kg heavy RT makes it easy. Regardless of whether there is a lot or little inclination, whether narrow or wide radii are required, whether high or moderate speed is applied, no matter whether humpbacks, waves or other carelessness of road maintenance threaten the driving pleasure.

The 1250er, which is easy to handle apart from the maneuvering, adds to the high level of the previous model by integrating the so-called automatic driving position compensation. Dynamic ESA “Next Generation” is the name of the system now. This means that the spring automatically biases depending on the load if the driver activates this function. Standard delivered at the at least 18,000 euros expensive RT now also the curve ABS.
Also always on board is the “Hill Start Control” as traction help on inclines or parking brake on slopes. The Pro version of the HSC belongs to the special equipment and can do it even better, namely on driver’s request automatically.
Also included in the Fahrmodi-Pro package is the “Dynamic Brake Assist” function. This prevents the driver from inadvertently accelerating during heavy braking. By intervening in the engine control, the drive torque is reduced during braking and at the same time the braking power at the rear wheel is fully utilized; This stabilizes the motorcycle and leads to the shortest possible stopping distance. The so-called “dynamic brake light” (wild flickering with very hard braking) is in the latest RT series. Finally, there is also a fast-reacting, automatic turn signal provision.
Not yet in the BMW program is found – for travel tourers more important than for city bikes – backlighting of handlebar switches and buttons. Such comfort can only be expected for the next RT generation, just like LED cornering lights. After all: LED daytime running lights are available, but cost extra money, how many niceties, which can be found in the equipment and price list.
