2019 BMW X1 sDrive18i Review: Specs, Performance, Features
2019 BMW X1 sDrive18i Review: Specs, Performance, Features – The BMW X1 is one of the fine, small, expensive SUVs. The three-cylinder basic petrol engine fits well with the BMW, with the transmission we had a few problems in everyday life test.
We have not had that for a long time. Get up early in the morning to see if the car is driving. The 2019 BMW X1 sDrive18i, with its three-cylinder basic gasoline engine, did indeed start reliably even in freezing temperatures. But the electronics were apparently too cold. She failed several times. Too bad, because otherwise managed the compact X1 our everyday test well..
2019 BMW X1 sDrive18i Dimensions & Platform
BMW sells the X1 since 2009 (E84) since 2015 there is the second generation F48. Since then he drives with front-wheel drive instead of rear-wheel drive – or depending on the engine as a four-wheel drive. After 3 and 5, the X1 is the most popular BMW model. The base gasoline BMW offers only as a front-wheel drive. That’s what we chose for the everyday test because we wanted to try out whether 140 hp on the front axle for the compact Bayern range.
At 4.43 meters in length and a wheelbase of 2.67 meters, the X1 feels not compact on the inside, but large. Four adults have enough space, only five will be tight. The entry is pleasantly easy due to the high seating position. The driver looks good all around, at least forwards and to the side. A wide D-pillar obstructs the rear. For more insight, the rear-facing camera (400 euros), if it is not filthy – which happens after a few highway kilometers. A cover or a disappearance in the logo as in VW would be more practical here.
With the clear body and the short overhangs, even narrow parking spaces in three trains are casually occupied. Trouble prepare only the wide side skirts. Although they look sporty but are impractical in everyday life. If you do not think about it and do not make a big lunge out of the car, you are stuck to the side of the sill with your trouser leg – and dirt will stick to the trousers afterward.
2019 BMW X1 sDrive18i Trunk Capacity
The trunk holds between 550 and 1,550 liters. That’s enough for everyday life and holiday four. He looks almost too beautiful to load, so noble dresses him with thick carpet. The backrest can be folded in three parts as standard. Opens the tailgate by foot movement (from equipment Advantage), the hands remain clean in winter. The opening height is sufficiently high at about 1.85 meters. Practical is also the flat loading floor and the keyless comfort access (390 euros) for the doors. The fall BMW typical with a rich sound in the lock.
2019 BMW X1 sDrive18i Interior
At least 32,350 euros costs a BMW X1, as one may expect a high-quality workmanship. The surfaces on the dashboard and the door pockets feel warm and soft, the thick M-leather steering wheel (120 euros) is fully in the hands. Clean seams testify to quality. Switches, buttons, seams, and gaps in the entire interior, nothing creaks or rattles. The fine wood finishes Fineline Stream with accent pearlescent highlights the interior. In 2019 BMW X1 sDrive18i you feel in good hands.
Even after hours of driving, the tightly upholstered seats with plenty of lateral support are very comfortable. An extendable leg rest supports the thigh well and the seat heating (330 Euro) warms quickly on the first few kilometers in winter.
The analog round instruments in silver-colored edging look classic and chic can be easily read. Compared to the digital speedometer of the Mercedes A-Class family or the new Volvo XC40, they look old-fashioned. The only digital support: The head-up display informs the driver clearly and clearly in the field of vision to the road.
2019 BMW X1 sDrive18i Features
The current model has been around since 2015, which is evident in the infotainment system. The attached screen integrates harmoniously into the cockpit, the narrow control bar underneath looks elegant and can be operated quickly and intuitively. Instead of a touch display, the X1 relies on operation via the iDrive controller for turning and pressing in the center console. The button is conveniently located and can be operated blind after just a few hours.
In the base hangs a 6.5-inch color display on the dashboard, in our test car an 8.8-inch color monitor including a head-up display for 2,890 euros with sharp map display, fast reactions, and current Traffic and traffic jams. You can’t complain. But at the cockpit newly developed vehicles show how old the X1 really is. Compared to the new Mercedes A-Class (and soon GLA) and the new Volvo XC40 affects the infotainment and navigation system outdated, such as CB radio to the smartphone.
2019 BMW X1 sDrive18i Safety
The basic features of the X1’s safety systems include six airbags, emergency brake assist, electric parking brake, attention-grabber and traffic sign recognition. On the other hand, BMW is paying more security and comfort. The cruise control costs 280 euros, the parking aid 450 euros, the reversing camera 400 euros and the driving assistant 600 euros. These include the lane departure warning, emergency brake assist with pedestrian detection and high beam assistant. The plus package for 1,120 euros also offers semi-autonomous driving in stop-and-go traffic up to 140 km / h and a steering assistant in a traffic jam. The DAB tuner costs 320 euros extra, the hi-fi speakers 290 euros. For the Apple Carplay preparation requires BMW 300 euros.
Engine Specs & Transmission
BMW offers gasoline engines between 140 and currently 192 hp and diesel between 116 and 190 hp. The three-cylinder base gasoline 2019 BMW X1 sDrive18i draws from 1.5 liters of displacement between 4,600 and 6,500 rpm 140 hp.
Between 1,480 and 4,200 rpm, the engine offers a torque of 220 Newton meters. The power goes exclusively to the front wheels and is enough for the at least 1.5 tons heavy BMW. No matter whether we were traveling with the X1 unloaded or packed with a total weight of at least two tons, the engine never reached its limits or sounded strained. He turns up but does not annoy with vibrations or noise.
BMW also has a good grip on the vibrations. Even shortly after the start in the cold state, the Motörchen hardly annoying by shaking or rattling. The three-cylinder turns up sound neutral. Especially between 2,500 and 3,500 tours feel the engine well, spontaneously responds to gas commands and otherwise holds back acoustically. Although we did not reach the average fuel consumption of 6.2 liters per 100 kilometers, the fuel consumption of 7.2 liters is okay on many cold days. At the 51-liter tank lights up at the latest from 700 kilometers, the display, for 50 euros, the tank holds ten liters more and the range increases accordingly.
What was not okay at all, were the electronic problems of the transmission. After a moderately cold night, the automatic transmission did not want to shift in the morning. The gears we had to turn until 5,000 tours, until with a hard hit the next year. After a few miles of driving, turning off and turning on the engine, the electronics had calmed down. The error message in the display disappeared.
That’s why we did not call the service. Can happen. For the 2019 BMW X1 sDrive18i, however, twice in two weeks. BMW has read out the error code after returning and informed that the “failure was due to a software problem of the transmission control. After being known in the house, the software was revised and can be updated at any time with a BMW dealer or branch. “For private customers then the way to the workshop would be inevitable.
The chassis of the X1 bounces off sporty and comfortable, with the adaptive suspension (500 Euro) it changes its character. But even in normal mode, the X1 remains taut and does not rock the body. In sports mode, it gets harder and harder on bad roads. The mounted 18-inch wheels fit well into the wheel arch and provide sufficient residual comfort with the mounted winter tires – 19-inch wheels would worsen the comfort.
Even the running noise does not penetrate excessively into the interior. We liked the variable sports steering (250 euros), which implements steering commands very directly and gives a good feeling for car road. Who likes it, can also have fun with the base engine and winding country roads. But also relaxed motorway tours with 140 km / h make with the X1 in combination with the three-cylinder mood.
2019 BMW X1 sDrive18i Price & Equipment
With 33,900 euros base price for an X1, the BMW is just above the German competitors Audi Q3 and Mercedes GLA. The base of the X1 includes 17-inch wheels, air conditioning, 6.5-inch monitor, rain sensor and multifunction steering wheel. BMW also offers the four design variants Advantage, Sports Line, xLine and M Sport.
The Sports Line we used included 18-inch wheels (19 inches optional), black roof rails, black underride protection, light package and LED headlights. In the interior, there were fabric leather seats and the thick sports leather steering wheel. In addition, by the Advantage Advantage on board: parking aid for the rear, cruise control, and the electrically operated tailgate. The LED headlights we would always order new vehicles, the rest rather not. Also on the Steptronic for 2,100 euros we could do without. For this we would choose a basic model with a large tank, comfort access, reversing camera, and Driving Assistant Plus. Our test car was very well equipped – and costs around 49,000 euros according to the price list.
Anyone looking for good workmanship in a sporty SUV dress will be happy with the X1. The three-cylinder basic petrol engine with 140 hp works quiet, powerful and economical. A good choice for city dwellers who do not care for sheer performance. Except for the software bugs, the BMW did well. The high price would rather deter us.
