At 4.43 meters in length and a wheelbase of 2.67 meters, the X1 feels not compact on the inside, but large. Four adults have enough space, only five will be tight. The entry is pleasantly easy due to the high seating position. The driver looks good all around, at least forwards and to the side. A wide D-pillar obstructs the rear. A cover or a disappearance in the logo as in VW would be more practical here.

Compared to the new Mercedes A-Class (and soon GLA) and the new Volvo XC40 affects the infotainment and navigation system outdated, such as CB radio to the smartphone.

Especially between 2,500 and 3,500 tours feel the engine well, spontaneously responds to gas commands and otherwise holds back acoustically. Although we did not reach the average fuel consumption of 6.2 liters per 100 kilometers, the fuel consumption of 7.2 liters is okay on many cold days. At the 51-liter tank lights up at the latest from 700 kilometers, the display, for 50 euros, the tank holds ten liters more and the range increases accordingly.

What was not okay at all, were the electronic problems of the transmission. After a moderately cold night, the automatic transmission did not want to shift in the morning. The gears we had to turn until 5,000 tours, until with a hard hit the next year. After a few miles of driving, turning off and turning on the engine, the electronics had calmed down. The error message in the display disappeared.

That’s why we did not call the service. Can happen. For the 2019 BMW X1 sDrive18i, however, twice in two weeks. BMW has read out the error code after returning and informed that the “failure was due to a software problem of the transmission control. Driving Experience

The chassis of the X1 bounces off sporty and comfortable, with the adaptive suspension (500 Euro) it changes its character. But even in normal mode, the X1 remains taut and does not rock the body. In sports mode, it gets harder and harder on bad roads. The mounted 18-inch wheels fit well into the wheel arch and provide sufficient residual comfort with the mounted winter tires – 19-inch wheels would worsen the comfort.

Even the running noise does not penetrate excessively into the interior. We liked the variable sports steering (250 euros), which implements steering commands very directly and gives a good feeling for car road. Who likes it, can also have fun with the base engine and winding country roads. But also relaxed motorway tours with 140 km / h make with the X1 in combination with the three-cylinder mood.

With 33,900 euros base price for an X1, the BMW is just above the German competitors Audi Q3 and Mercedes GLA. The base of the X1 includes 17-inch wheels, air conditioning, 6.5-inch monitor, rain sensor and multifunction steering wheel. Our test car was very well equipped – and costs around 49,000 euros according to the price list.

Anyone looking for good workmanship in a sporty SUV dress will be happy with the X1. The three-cylinder basic petrol engine with 140 hp works quiet, powerful and economical. A good choice for city dwellers who do not care for sheer performance. Except for the software bugs, the BMW did well. The high price would rather deter us.
