2019 Ford Edge Review; More Power and Better Interior [UPDATE]
In January, the facelift of the 2019 Ford Edge Debuted in Detroit Motor Show. Now Ford is showing the European version, with more power and a new automatic transmission.
At the Geneva Motor Show 2018, Ford is presenting the European version of the freshly lifted SUVs edge for the first time. Ford sold it in Europe only since the early summer of 2016 – the Canadian-mounted model in America has been in the trade for two years. A good four years have passed since the start of production. Time for an extensive facelift.
The Ford Edge Facelift is visible on the modified front with a slightly wider grille. In future, similar to the new Ford Fiesta, it will be specially adapted for every outfit: Black honeycombs for the St-line, chrome for titanium. As before, Ford offers the edge in the trendy and titanium equipment, the sporty “St-line” and the luxurious “Vignale” version.
The most important technical innovations concern the powertrain as well as new assistants: Until now the edge has been switched to a six-speed dual-clutch transmission in the automatic version, and an eight-speed Wandlerautomatik for the new model year. There is no fundamental change in the engine programme for Europe: it includes a 2.0-liter diesel in two power levels.
2019 Ford Edge Engine Specs
In both variants, however, the revised engine offers more power in the future. The base version is powered by 10 hp on 190 hp and always comes with a 6-speed transmission and four-wheel drive. In the Topvariante, a Biturbo version of the engine will be used in the future. It is 238 PS (previously: 210 hp) and is always connected to the new automatic and four-wheel drive.
The new assistants are offering Ford in Europe for the first time. A “post-collision assist” is to prevent the vehicle from colliding with further obstacles after a collision. The prerequisite for the triggering is, for example, that the airbag is also tripping, according to Ford. The new alternative assistant is to assist the driver in an evasive maneuver: if this is the case, the assistant will help with the lightning-fast calculated, necessary steering movement. In combination with the eight-speed automatic control, adaptive cruise control controls the self-stopping and start-up in traffic jams and also keeps the center of the track.
Improve Four Wheel Drive System
On snowy roads and off-road, the Edge drives quite confidently. There is no gear reduction or mechanical lock as in an off-road vehicle, but unlike in the US versions, all-wheel drive is standard in the Europa-Edge.
The four-wheel drive system has upgraded Ford once again. The so-called “total traction system” permanently measures the grip of the tires on the road surface and variably ensures the optimum torque transfer between the four wheels. There is nothing to feel it – except that the Edge remains sovereign even in the most adverse conditions.
If four-wheel is not needed, the system turns off largely, so that almost no more necessary mechanics runs along. That saves fuel. Ford is quoting an average of 6.7 liters per 100 kilometers for the big diesel. On hunchbacked track and with many sprints on the road, it’s more about the eight-liter mark.
2019 Ford Edge Interior & Equipment
In the cockpit, Ford relies on careful optimization. The 2019 Ford Edge is provided with a redesigned center console with an electric parking brake, larger compartments, and an additional storage area. For automatic versions, the transmission functions are controlled by a rotary knob. There are new configuration options for the digital display instrument.
The infotainment and connectivity system Sync 3 was already available in the 2019 Ford Edge. It controls Apple Carplay and Android car and allows many functions to be operated by voice control or an 8-inch touchscreen. In future, smartphones can be charged wirelessly in an inductive shell. Also new is a hifi system from Bang & Olufsen, whose 12 speakers have been specially tuned for the edge.
A space giant is not the edge – at least compared to a van. He will have a hard time with convinced Galaxy drivers. Nevertheless, space is easily enough for the normal family. Up to 1,847 liters of cargo space are an announcement. With its enlarged grille, the Edge also offers significantly more prestige.
As in the past, the Edge convinces with its well- balanced suspension, where it can compete with the best in its class. The interior also offers valuable materials below the noble Vignale equipment.
So already in the basic version trend higher quality plastics, also stands the simplest Edge on 19-inch wheels. Titanium, ST-Line, and Vignale will be even finer. For extended distances, the Edge features heated, ventilated and extremely comfortable seats, as well as active noise cancellation.
Also in the safety and assistance systems, Ford has refilled again. The Edge now offers just about everything that’s good and expensive in this class. For example, LED headlamps (optional adaptive) and belt airbag in the back, a stowage pilot, the evasion assistant or a multi-collision brake that brings the vehicle to a stop after an accident.
The backward Ausparken with cross traffic warning and automatic emergency braking dominates the Edge also, in the US that will soon be mandatory anyway. Ten Wi-Fi connections should be enough for Youtube, Facebook and Instagram traffic in the back seats.
In order to really keep up with the German premium competition, the Edge, however, lacks a top engine that fascinates a bit more – even if the reasonable diesel in the end are bought more often. In the US, Ford offers a 235-horsepower gasoline engine. In this country, the ST Line must be enough, which at least visually offers something sporty flair.
But who knows what Ford will postpone if Mondeo or Galaxy actually disappear from the market in a few years? The facelift of the Ford Edge debuted in Europe in March 2018. However, it is only in the trade, in January 2019.
2019 Ford Edge Release Date and Price
Ford wanted to shorten the duration between premiere and market launch in the future. The Edge facelift has already been successful: in January 2018, the revised edge is to be sold in the fourth quarter of 2018.
Speaking of yours: with around 16,000 units across Europe, the Ford Edge 2017 was at the top of the large, imported SUV segment – ahead of Kia Sorento and Hyundai Sante Fe, and ranked roughly at the level of a Land Rover Discovery. Not a bad result in the first full year of sales – even if Ford sold nearly ten times the number of copies from the established, smaller Kuga. Prices are not yet called Ford. So far, the Ford Edge is starting at 41,900 euros. The top Model Vignale starts at 52,700 Euro.
