The compact car of Honda is no longer really compact. In its tenth generation, the civic attaches to the order. It is as big as a hatchback as old Mittelklässler with a level. At the same time, it is built under the hood: the base now works with three cylinders and one liter of cubic capacity. This is now common in the compact class, but new in the 2019 Honda Civic.
The exterior remains characteristic, including the spoiler centered on the rear window. The eye-catching design may not please everyone, of course. This courage is a real rarity in the volume segment. No one else is allowed to experiment here. The Civic is a welcome change.

2019 Honda Civic Redesign; Dimensions
More size means more space. Nevertheless, the length of 4.52 meters (+ 13.5 cm) and 2.70-meter wheelbase (+ 9.5 cm) does not even fall in the first moment. More importantly, Honda no longer places the gasoline tank under the front seats. He slips far back in front of the rear axle. This allows for a lower seating position and more headroom at the front.
As a result, big riders finally have enough space in the Civic. The price for this: the “magic seats” of the predecessor are no more. The seat of the rear seat can no longer be folded up as in the Civic 9. There is a loss of autonomy and genuine added value. The trunk remains for comfort.
And what a: 478 liters up to the window edge are a great class. With so much space, we accept the stage just behind the back seats. To the interior giant, the Civic is not overall. Its flat silhouette (1.43 meters) and the sloping roof cost space. In the back, it’s tight on the head. For this, the legroom fits in the rear. Practical: the side-closing loading room cover (saves space) and the huge compartment in the center console (offers space).
There will not be a civic kombi in Generation 10 by the way. Honda offers the current model exclusively as a sedan or as a door.
2019 Honda Civic Interior
You have to get used to the cockpit of the Civic. It seems playful and little harmonious. Too many materials and styles are changing. The speedometer is digital. The switches on the steering wheel do not look well thought out, the radio can only be operated by touch-but does not look like this. It takes a while to stop regulating the temperature when you are actually talking about the volume.
The processing in the 2019 Honda Civic is fine. We want more uniformity in the materials, less PlayStation in the speedometer and a nicer feel on the steering. It gets better on the center console. Here, Honda installs clear, pleasant-clicking switches. That’s the way it should be.
Whether a civic is networked decides the equipment. In the base, there is nothing, a stage about it, after all, a radio. From “Elegance” a Navi with a 7-inch display, smartphone networking, Internet access and HDMI connection is included as standard. Higher types of equipment get better sound systems. The navigation software comes from Garmin.
The system connects quickly with telephones, navigates reliably and plays music from all important media. Prettier graphics would be nice, a knob for the volume handy. Annoying: Anyone who does not confirm the system’s distraction clause (after each start) will land in the screensaver.
Most assistants build Honda as standard in the Civic. Adaptive cruise control, Lane assistant, mountain driving assistance, traffic sign recognition, collision detector with pedestrian detection and automatic main beam are always on board. Parking aids and blind spot detectors are available in the expensive variants. A decent package.
Some of the helpers have to rework Honda. The track-keeping assistant of our 2019 Honda Civic failed completely in the rain. The cruise control kept the distance but did not want to give gas in the overtaking. And the automatic remote light switched to sluggish. Some drivers shared this with us by the headlights.
Quite bad: The standard halogen headlights just barely shine in front of the car. Dipping light has been improving in this class for almost 20 years.

The little Civic feels most comfortable in the city (and around it). Here he drives quietly and sparingly: while commuting to the Berlin countryside he injected an average of 6.1 liters per 100 kilometers. In professional traffic, there were 8, with dense traffic 9 liters. It was not even at a brisk pace on the highway. That’s fine.
As standard, Honda combines a crisp six-hand transmission with the base gasoline engine. In the first two courses, the translations are tangled in the turbo. But with a little bit of getting used to it, regular civic riders will not notice it anymore soon.
At a brisk pace, the 2019 Honda Civic is excellent. The chassis and steering are Honda Agile and direct. Especially in fleet curves, this setup is like. The Honda is backed up with the rear axle clean and pulls jaggedly around the curve.
Although he pursues a completely different goal, the Civic reminds us of excellent examples of Japanese voting art such as the Mazda MX-5 or the Toyota GT86: it does not require extreme performance for driving a pleasure. So much agility would not be expected in the light of the small engine.
2019 Honda Civic Price; Equipment and Conclusion Test
There are many things to criticize the civic, but much can be seen. You get used to the operation, just like the playful interior and the unsightly navi. If you can live with it, you will get an agile, economical and self-employed car. We especially liked the series chassis.
In the light, however, the Civic Blackburn on a grand scale. The base burned belong to 2017 no longer in a new car. Better lamps with LED light sources are not available at an additional cost, but only in the higher equipment variants. “1.0 Turbo Executive” (from 28,100 Euro) or “1.5 Turbo Sport” (182 hp; 27,960 euro) should be at least if you want to leave the city border behind more often.
That’s a lot of money for a compact car. However, there is a lot of equipment for this. We only missed good light at “elegance” (from 25,170 euro). “Sport” gets LED lamps and the bigger engine. As an “executive” the Civic rides with the basic machine, but better loudspeakers, active suspension, automatic dimming mirrors and a few helper. More is possible, but not necessarily useful.
