A car like a belly-clap, somewhere between Geil and “What are you doing?” Exterior angular, inside funky, of course, SUV, but not a brand closet but fight beetles. This impression is deceptive. There is no more than 122 horsepower. We test the hybrid version with 122 PS.

The 2019 Toyota C-HR Hybrid joins VW T-Roc or Opel Mocha. 4.36 meters mean a bit more length than the competition. Viewed from the Exterior, the C-hr looks somehow younger. Practical replacements for smartphones and the like? Wrong display, except for the two cup holders in the center console.
The seats are better. Nicely tight and with enough lateral support. The aim of the designers was to achieve a high sense of agility in urban traffic. That’s why the steering wheel grips nicely. From the “style selection” equipment it is heated. Nice: A hinted diamond pattern in the body beading, Türtafeln, in the roof sky and the door. Toyota is saving on iron. When the door is slammed, a high, tinny sound sounds, even worse is the tank lid. Kleng! That sounds live as it reads.
Infotainment is controlled by the eight-inch display. This is easy even when driving: the right hand with four fingers parks at the top of the case, the thumb taps the individual boxes. Folders and menu navigation are self-explanatory, Navi and radio react quickly. OK, the Toyota graphics could be more modern. Typical Toyota Hybrid: The momentary is displayed as a chart. For the Navi Touch & Go with 3-D cards and three-year update, Toyota requires 790 euros.
Between the two round instruments in the cockpit, the 4.2-inch display displays information about the vehicle, the journey, and the audio source. In our style selection Wummerte, a JBL sound system with nine speakers and 576 watts.
As standard, the C-HR has seven airbags, active headrests, dipped-beam automatics, mountain-driving assistance, a brake assistant, an accident detection system, a beam-light assistant, track keeping with active steering support and a cruise control with Speed limiters on board.
The front collision detector responds very nervously in combination with the emergency assistant. So sometimes it rings in panic, even though the car ahead is still far away. Several times he struck an alarm without any other road user insight. The system also slows down too early in the case of shearing under cruise control. We would, therefore, dispense with the helper at the current stage of development. This is not the only time to disable the system occasionally. An expensive extra is the full LED headlights for 1,100 euros. The ultrasonic parking aid for the front is also not favorable at 350 euro.

Press Start button, the lever on D and the Toyota buzz electrically loose. The C-HR uses the proven hybrid technology from the Prius. Means: 1.8-liter-four cylinders with 98 PS plus a 72 hp strong electric motor. Together, the 122 horsepower results in system performance. With very little pressure on the accelerator and up to about 30 km/h, 2019 Toyota C-HR Hybrid runs purely electrically. If the battery turns off the power, the burner will turn on. That makes Toyota perfect.
The pitch changes when the game is on the accelerator. Instead of soft säuselnd, the four-cylinder sounds intense and loud. It is sometimes tedious to overtake. Although the C-HR accelerates with 163 Newton meter torque from 0 to 100 km/h in 11 seconds and creates 170 km/h peak.
But the automatic transmission, which is integrated between the motor and the drive shaft, corrupts the good mood. The propulsion feels leaner than it is. The typical, somewhat asynchronous hybrid feeling: it becomes loud, felt nothing happens. If you don’t know that, you’ll need to take it. It is especially not suitable for the progressive optics of the C-HR.
To comfort: The four-cylinder runs for a long time in the optimum speed range and burns little fuel. At a mixed ride in the city, over land and highway at directional speed and without heating, it was on average 6.2 liters to 100 kilometers. A look at Spritmonitor.de shows that the average consumption of the hybrid version is 5.04 liters to 100 kilometers. Extreme outlier: 7.66 liters.
That’s all OK, but a bit away from the NEDC standard consumption of 3.8 liters. In terms of thrift, the C-HR remains behind the identically motorized Prius. The small tank holds 43 liters, of which about 5 liters reserve and is sufficient for a practical range of around 610 kilometers.
Hardly a hybrid fan will move the Toyota C-HR primarily athletically. For you, relaxed gliding counts. This is what the C-HR does with its balanced chassis. It’s taut, but not hard. The C-HR drives balanced, pleasant, good. The chassis is easy to compare to T-Roc or Audi A2. If one hides the aggressive optics and the sometimes annoyingly high-rotating gasoline engine, then the C-HR agile as few in this class. Great job, Toyota.

The C-HR then drives with 18-inches, has a seat heater, a heated steering wheel, and other amenities – we would recommend this option. The hybrid drive, however, does not fit ideally into the jagged SUV – unless you buy the Toyota precisely because of this drive.
In 2019 Toyota C-HR Hybrid, however, he can’t play his savings advantage as convincingly as in Prius or Auris. The cheaper, conventional 1.2-liter turbo petrol engine with 116 HP is a good alternative to this car. Should be 4WD, anyway the only one (from 31,240 euros).
