We had already taken in hand the 2019 Volvo V60 D3 in its 190 hp diesel version. But in our market, it is the D3 model of 150 hp that is likely to make the most followers, especially since it is the only other engine proposed in the catalog.
The Volvo V60 is, first of all, a line: at a time when German luxury specialists are looking a little, it must be admitted that the Swedish manufacturer is administering some serious design lessons. His new break is a hit thanks to a limpid style, who knows where he goes and does not multiply the features and gimmicks. Still, in a market where customers are overwhelmingly companies, doing pretty is not enough. Despite the big statements, it is still necessary to go through the diesel box and if possible in several levels of power.
Even Volvo, which has announced loud and clear its willingness to abandon this type of engine from next year has indeed approved its break in two versions four-cylinder D4 190 hp and D3 150 hp. The 2019 Volvo V60 D3 150 version may well be on our market the V60 most broadcast for a while. Even to those who claim their dislike of diesel, this fuel reveals hard drug lures!
2019 Volvo V60 D3 Price & Equipment
In recent years, Volvo sees itself as a premium manufacturer in its own right and has given up trying to compete with GPs. This is seen in the cost since the V60 range starts from 36.500 €. And again this is the manual version of the D3, with the first level of finishing “V60” rather chick. The average ticket is easily above € 40,000 while our model in high registration finish costs € 50,000 without options. It is clearly missing in the V60 range a motor access to around 120 hp that all competitors offer.
The list of standard equipment has to be checked to see that the V60, however, offers a significantly better price/equipment ratio than its German competitors. True to the reputation of the brand, it plays the “all inclusive” in terms of security. Optional equipment among competitors is systematically in series: this is the case of the frontal anti-collision system or the post-crash braking system. But that does not stop there: our Inscription model is certainly a bit more expensive than an Audi A4 Avant TDI 150 S tronic Design, but it also offers leather, 18-inch wheels or Google Car connectivity and Android Auto.
2019 Volvo V60 D3 Performance
Volvo has rarely been a benchmark in chassis development and drivability. However, we must recognize that the V60 is making significant progress in this area. Admittedly, it can still be blamed for insufficient filtering of irregularities, but the unmanned damping is rather effective on all types of the road above 50 km/h. Without being a model in the field, the direction offers a well-balanced consistency and no longer offers the artificial sensation that could be blamed on other models of the brand.
In short, without competing with a Peugeot 508 or even a BMW 3 Series Touring, the V60 proves pleasant to lead. However, there are still some defects, starting with the vibration of diesel idling and noisy as soon as you accelerate: it always sounds an unpleasant note. Since this is not in favor of soundproofing, we wonder what are all these unused pounds that drag the V60. With 1,729 kg in BVA version, this station wagon weighs nothing less than 200 kg more than an Audi A4 Avant TDI 150 S tronic 7. Compared to the 508 BlueHDi 130 EAT8 station, the gap reaches 250 kg! We dare not imagine the mass of future hybrid versions.
This overweight is manifested by a lack of vivacity evident given the power. The accelerations appear a little lazy despite the efficiency of the eight-speed transmission. This also results in actual consumption quite far from normalized figures. We found an average of 7 l on a mixed course conducted without excess. It’s time for Volvo to go on a severe diet!
2019 Volvo V60 D3 Interior & Compartment
Well drawn on the outside, the V60 is also inside. The style is relaxing and ergonomics “all screen” rather well thought out, without excess functionality. On the other hand, some plastics leave something to be desired at the level of the central console. The absence of buttons can sometimes annoy the driver, but the large central touchscreen of the Volvo V60 is easy to use thanks to well thought out menus. The center console flap certainly discovers a storage of an impressive length, but not much room for storing a mobile phone flat. Two adults find their comfort in the back. On the other hand, the V60 does not have much regard for the central passenger, embarrassed by the console and by the hardness of its base. Very well designed, the seats of the Volvo V60 offer excellent seating comfort, many possibilities of adjustment and good support.
The V60 is not one of the most available station wagons, but it offers a correct volume of 529 l. The layout of the cargo area is very neat. The bench folds flat floor completely through buttons. Ultimate attention, the headrests fold automatically to facilitate the maneuver.
2019 Volvo V60 D3 Verdict
The V60 finds a particularly large competition on its way, starting with the one from Germany. The three premium specialists all offer 150 hp models. The comfortable Mercedes C-Class, which has been restyled opposes our Volvo in its version C200d 9G Tronic Avantgarde Line billed € 46,000. Apart from the aforementioned Audi A4 Avant, the BMW 318d Touring also features a € 50,800 Luxury finish, which will be replaced next year.
V60 must also count with the competition of the generic manufacturers. The closest in size and interior volume is undoubtedly the Peugeot 508 SW, soon to test in our columns. Its volume of a trunk is almost identical to that of the Volvo but it does not count exactly identical engines since the nearest version is the BlueHDi 160 hp, charged 41.200€ in GT Line version. Less focused on elegance, the Volkswagen Passat SW, on the other hand, plays on the volume of loading with its 650 l of useful volume. It is exchanged for €46,840 in TDI version 150 DSG7 Carat Exclusive.
The Volvo V60 is quite pleasant to drive, offers a well-appointed trunk, a pleasant interior, and a good habitability. However, it is not quite at the level of the best in terms of soundproofing, performance, and comfort. We especially regret its high mass, which is paid in vivacity and consumption. Remains its extremely attractive line, which helps to forget its shortcomings. And as Volvo knows how to make some effort in terms of price/equipment, we would be easily tempted!
