The 2020 Ford Kuga is one of the most popular SUVs in the country. A facelift in 2016 has further enhanced the Cologne. The Kuga 2.0 TDCI in the everyday test.
Dynamic, comfortable, reliable: the Kuga belongs to Ford’s most important models. In 2017, the compact was one of the three best-selling SUV in Europe – only Mercedes GLC and VW Tiguan were even more popular. The VW, in particular, is competing with the Kuga.
The Ford does not make it easy for the VW. With the facelift in 2016, the Kuga is once again more mature. The Kuga 2.0 TDCI had to prove itself in everyday life for two weeks. He usually did well, in Berlin city traffic as a travel car on the highway.
2020 Ford Kuga Redesign; Dimensions
The first impression counts. That is why Ford has missed a larger radiator grille for the Kuga model year 2017. Thus, the Kuga is less tame than before. The basic dimensions of the Kuga, of course, did not change with the model maintenance. The SUV also offers a lot of space – especially if the rear seats are not needed and can be folded.
Families with children have to confine themselves to the luggage space, which is quite manageable. Here the Kuga offers about 450 liters of storage space. That’s enough for two, three big suitcases. If you want to ride a pram or a tricycle, it will be difficult. During our drive to the Harz, the car was packed fast up to the top, part of the luggage had to stay at home.
Why is that? The 2020 Ford Kuga weighs 1.6 tonnes and is not a small car. The space conditions are due to the modern vehicle concept. Under the huge front window of the Kuga there is a lot of space on the dashboard, which unfortunately can not be used. This open space could be used well in the trunk.
So the luggage travels cramped, the passengers can make themselves comfortable on the comfortable seats. Even large drivers with a height of 1.90 meters do not use corners in the generous kuga cockpit. On the edge of the side window you can relax the elbow, even if it is not supposed to lie there. There is also a lot of legroom in the rear. Fifth place on the bench is not much more than a rumble seat. On longer distances, one does not want to squeeze into this niche.
2020 Ford Kuga Interior & features
In the pre-facelift-Kuga, customers and press were disturbed by the many buttons and the cumbersome operation. This is where Ford has now tidied up. All buttons easily accessible and logically arranged. Although many parts are made of plastic, the material does not seem cheap. The comfortable rear seats with tilt-adjustable backrest do not cause back pain even during long trips. Under the center armrest, there is a storage compartment in which two USB ports are hidden. The beverage holders are too small in the center console as they do not hold one-liter bottles.
Infotainment & Connectivity
In the old Kuga, the too small screen was negative. This has been done: The touchscreen is now much larger (eight inches) and recognizes like the mobile phone besides tip commands also wiping movements. The communication and entertainment System Ford sync supports various smartphone apps and voice commands in the third generation.
For the search for petrol stations, parking places or resting places, Kuga drivers only need to press a button and then use formulas such as “I need a coffee” or “I want to refuel”. The same applies to stations, airports, and hotels. You can also enter such commands classic in the Navi. The CD audio system is convincing with good sound. However, the operation of the radio is somewhat getting used to, the channel search requires some practice.
Assistance Systems | Security
The All-round view in the Ford Kuga is relatively good overall. When turning, the wide C-pillar sometimes dangerously limits the view. Subsequent cyclists on the right rear side can be quickly overlooked. In doing so, Ford explicitly promotes its “most advanced technologies and sophisticated vehicle structures” that zugutekämen drivers and other road users alike.
The new, multifunctional headlight system is now available for the Kuga for the first time. It recognizes the current lighting conditions and automatically adjusts the light angle of the xenon headlights-depending on the speed, steering, and other cars ahead.
Several security features belong to the Kuga to the series range, no matter which equipment line you choose. Active City Stop (emergency braking system against low-speed rear-up accidents) costs 350 euros in principle. Alternatively, you can book a whole “technology package” for at least 1050 euros.
In addition to the active city, it contains stop assistance systems such as exterior mirrors with dead angle assistant or a traffic sign detection system. In the practice test, this was often overwhelmed and did not show changed permissible maximum speeds at all or too late.
Also, the lane assistant with fatigue detector is well meant. In practice, it acts primarily as a reminder to blinking muffle. On the highway, the assistant takes a very radical turn when the center line is minimally overridden with steering wheel vibrations. With a few button presses on the multifunction steering wheel, you can turn it off.
2020 Ford Kuga Engine Specs, Transmission & Driving performance
With 150 hp, the 2020 Ford Kuga 2.0 TDCI is not an athlete but properly motorized. The 370 Newton-meter maximum torque is easy enough to overtake on the highway. On the highway, it is easy to travel at 150, 160 km/h. Just under 200 km/h are in it, however, it is starting about 170 km/h quite noisy in the overall neatly abgedämmten interior.
The six-speed manual transmission works solidly, only the third gear sometimes goes a little notch in the box. The automatic transmission, which is only available in combination with four-wheel drive, is better suited to the leisurely Kuga. Instead of the specified 4.7 liters in combined standard consumption, we did not use the diesel under 8.0 liters of consumption to 100 kilometers – with a rather moderate drive. That’s a lot.
Alternatively, the Kuga diesel also comes with 120 or 180 hp. However, the driven 150-horsepower version seems to be the Golden Center. The capacity-weaker 120-horsepower diesel has to contend with in the 1.6-tonner, but the top diesel does not really have to pay. After all, the Ford Kuga is a rather comfortable character, and even with the towing load, it offers no advantages over the average diesel with four-wheel drive (4,350 kg).
The basic character of the 2020 Ford Kuga: serene and comfortable. Even so, the mid-range SUV is dynamically tuned enough to fit into a curve. Even fully loaded, it can be moved agile through the traffic.
The steering works nicely directly, the undercarriage also feels taut and sometimes even hard. The Kuga is sometimes unpleasant about larger ground waves, even on bad roads it rutted some wood. Our test-Kuga was a Fronttriebler. We did not miss the optional all-wheel drive in the Middle mountains. However, there was not much snow.
2020 Ford Kuga Price & Equipment (2018 year)
The entry price according to the price list is at the Kuga at 23,300 Euro, for this you get the smallest petrol (120 hp) in the equipment line “trend”. With the entry-level diesel (also 1.5 l capacity and 120 hp) it is 27,950 euro. In the base, the Kuga offers, for example, air conditioning, audio system with steering wheel remote control and speed control system. and stands on steel rims. Who wants to roll on Alurädern, accesses “Titanium” (from 29,200 Euro) or “St-line” (from 31,650 euro). In the sporty St-line, extras like Park assistant with a parking function, body styling kit, and leather seats are automatically on board.
Our test unit had the best-selling “titanium” line of equipment, including the rear armrest, Windscreen wiper with rain sensor and automatic climate control. In addition, there was an “easy-driver package” with electrically retractable exterior mirrors and parking aids as well as the “technology package” with active city stop, traffic sign detection and lane assistant including fatigue detector.
The also surcharge, sensor-controlled tailgate, and the Electric door security were helpful in family life. The door handles in the rear can also be easily reached for small children’s arms. All in all, the price of the Kuga can be quickly soaring if you put one or the other extra value. Nevertheless, the 2020 Ford Kuga is always cheaper than a comparable equipped Tiguan. Especially as Ford regularly makes attractive special offers. Currently, the SUV is subject to a different price recommendation of 18,990 euro in the base.
