My test MX-5 is on the standard chassis. Not on the unnecessary Bilstein parts that take the roadster’s sensibility. It moves on the springs, tilts slightly with turning radius or brake pressure. Transparent, natural and very quickly familiar, that’s the better description.

But that’s nothing new. Now it’s about the engine. The delivery from 2,000 revs useful power, from 4,000 revs/min begins the fun zone. It now ends at 7,500 revolutions and not already at 6,800 as before. You could drive the Transfagarasan completely in 3rd gear. Only in the tight hairpins, the 2nd gear is necessary, otherwise, the MX-5 does not come out of the kink. The 4th we reserve for the wide curves and the few straight pieces.

The small gear knob clicks the gears precisely and emphatically pure. There are nowhere shorter ways to do mass production. Mazda offers the MX-5 also with automatic, which is even more unnecessary than a Bilstein suspension. The MX-5 is one of the few cars that can also go wood shoe dancers with hoe-tip technique. Of course without wooden shoes.

The pedals are close enough together, with enough brake pressure is also the height of the accelerator pedal. And: The engine responds spontaneously and precisely, as only a sucker can. Every centimeter of pedal travel it translates into constant speed and without delay. You can drive into a frenzy on the Transfagarasan. Anyway, early in the morning when most Romanians and tourists are still sitting at the breakfast table.

The technical effort that Mazda has operated is enormous. Suction engine tuning is not just a question of boost pressure and engine control. Mazda has stepped deep into the hardware to increase performance and change its evolution. The air intake has been increased, as has the throttle body diameter. The air now flows better through the intake manifold, the intake ports have a larger cross-section, the intake valves have a larger diameter.

The engineers increased the cam lift, installed lighter exhaust valves. To reduce mass inertia and friction, there are 27 grams lighter, newly formed pistons and 41 grams lighter connecting rods. A new dual-mass flywheel improves the response, the injection pressure was raised to 300 bar.

Does it all help that the big engine in the MX-5 is as fun to drive as the small one? The Skyactiv G 132 gets a horsepower for 2019 and an additional two Newton meters of torque. Hardly anyone will feel that. In memory, the 1.5-liter vacuum cleaner turned a little happier and speaks more directly.

Nevertheless, we missed nothing on the test drive with the 2.0. Especially: The 1.5-liter engine requires more switching work. Nevertheless, and despite power shortage, he was the better package so far. Now it could be the 2.0. He can also cruise. Beyond the 30s zone, it may be the sixth course in town. The outing can be done so in a walk, so to speak.

But you would have to discipline yourself. This is not the right time. The track is free, the next hairpin is in front of me. Braking, intermediate, 2nd gear, gas … and so on.
