Little appetite for the curiosity about the new electric SUV in recent days. A few pictures, a few short videos from the EQC. It was already clear: Offensively, the first electric Mercedes of the new generation does not carry its inner life to the outside. Now the complete car was shown in Stockholm. Mercedes calls it the premiere as “avant-garde”. Oh well. We would say complacent. And do not mean that negatively.
You do not want to overwhelm the customers, that’s probably a good decision. Hence the fake grille, so the shape resembles that of the GLC, with a little more elegance. Inside, the electric SUV is also familiar. There are new materials, a bit of rose gold and key-operated air vents, but the well-known center console and widescreen in front of the driver.
The EQC is the vanguard of the seven new E-models, with which Daimler wants to drive into the electric future. By 2022, a total of ten pure electric cars will be at the start. The three already available Smart models included. The EQC shows the building blocks of the electric Mercedes for the first time. In addition to the pure hardware from electric motor and battery, it is about services. But later. First to the hardware.
2020 Mercedes EQC Engine Specifications
Mercedes uses two electric motors in the EQC, which together generate 300 kW (408 hp). Front and rear are the engines including transmission, differential, cooling system and power electronics combined into a compact unit, which is called eATS (electric drivetrain). The engines are largely identical but differently tuned.
The engine on the front axle was trimmed for efficiency. It serves the weak to medium load range and could also be used alone, for example in an upcoming EQA. The eATS on the rear axle, on the other hand, aims for performance. It could serve alone as the middle engine for the electric middle class, or at the lower end of the larger classes.
Together, both engines provide 765 Newton meters of torque. Enough for a sprint time in the EQC from 5.1 seconds to 100. The torque distribution between the axles is dynamic and fully variable with torque vectoring. In the reverse direction, the motors become generators and feed energy into the battery when braking.
2020 Mercedes EQC DImensions & Weight
The battery alone provides 650 kg of the total weight of 2,425 kilograms. 384 pouch cells, distributed over six modules (two with 48, four with 72 cells) in the underbody, have a capacity of 80 kWh (210 Ah) and reach a maximum voltage of 408 volts. For the range calls Mercedes still no final figures, but promises more than 450 kilometers according to NEDC. It will probably be a few more kilometers in the end. Not impressive value. Competitors such as the Jaguar I-Pace or the Audi e-Tron continue with their 90 or 95 kWh batteries.
A liquid cooling system keeps the battery pack with high requirements for operating, at low temperatures, the battery is heated. A heat pump and two electric heaters regulate the temperature in the EQC. Ideally, the car is pre-air-conditioned when charging.
This happens either at home in the socket, on a wallbox or on a pillar. With the Wallbox charging power of 7.4 kW are possible, with direct current by fast charging column up to 110 kW . Then it takes about 40 minutes for the battery to charge from 10 to 80 percent. Again, you can wish for more. Finally, Daimler is working with partners to set up a fast-charging network with columns that can supply up to 350 kW.
2020 Mercedes EQC Test Drive
To keep noises from the high-revving electric motors from the interior, Mercedes has decoupled the drive units twice. Rubber mounts isolate them from the subframe, which in turn is decoupled from the bodywork. During a first ride, we were already able to convince ourselves that the concept works. Five driving modes can be selected in the EQC. Comfort for everyday use, Eco for low consumption, Max Range for even lower consumption , Sport for, well, sporty driving and Individual for special requests. For this purpose, the recuperation can be varied via shift paddles on the steering wheel in five stages. In D- the EQC can be driven with a pedal, in D + it sails.
Most elaborate is the program D Auto. Here the Eco Assistant uses vehicle sensors such as the radar and the stereo camera, navigation data and traffic sign recognition to adapt the operating state to the driving situation. Depending on traffic, route and speed limits, the system decides whether to sail or recuperate . For this, the driver receives appropriate instructions.
MBUX Infotainment System
The infotainment system MBUX can already do a lot in the A-Class . In the EQC, the “Mercedes-Benz User Experience” becomes even more extensive. Of course, the system displays the state of charge, range and energy flow of the electric car, as well as charging stations in the navigation system.
Above all, however, Mercedes promises extensive networking of various services. So you can already plan a route at home and set the departure time, so that the car can be appropriately air-conditioned. The route is calculated inclusive of required charging stops . Fast charging stations are preferred, the required charging time is calculated taking into account possible next charging stops in order to optimize the total travel time. Who adheres to the recommendations, so only loads as much as necessary and goes quickly on the journey again.
The user is informed of the expected state of charge at the start, as well as the arrival time taking into account all stops. By push message you can get informed when the loading process is started or finished. The “Mercedes me Charge” service is to provide access to charging stations of various providers and not stop at national borders. Payment is made by app.
Incidentally, the Mercedes EQC gives a small view of the assistants in future Mercedes models. The intelligent cruise control can do more now, especially in traffic jams. It reduces the speed to 100 km / h even before a traffic jam end and is able to form a rescue lane in traffic jams . Below 60 km / h, the EQC orientates itself at the outer edge of the road. 2020 Mercedes EQC Release Date & Production
Mercedes will start production of the EQC in Bremen next year. It is mounted on the same tape as C-Class and GLC . According to Mercedes, this is so flexible that the manufacturer can respond quickly to customer demand. The drive modules eATS are built in Hamburg and delivered to Bremen for the wedding with the bodywork. The batteries come from Kamenz, where the Daimler subsidiary Deutsche Accumotive manufactures them.
As the second location, the Beijing Benz Automotive (BBAC) joint venture in Beijing is being prepared for production there. In the future, Rastatt, Sindelfingen, Tuscaloosa in the USA and Hambach in France will also be building EQ models . Rastatt acts as a competence center for compact models, Sindelfingen for the upper class. In Tuscaloosa mainly electric SUVs are built.
But that is still future music. Initially, the EQC will be launched in mid-2019 . Prices reveals Mercedes so early not yet. The slightly weaker GLC 43 4Matic, which offers slightly better performance, starts as a coupe at just over 67,000 euros. Presumably, the EQC will not be cheaper.
