This pickup grows out of an SUV: VW extends the compact T-Roc around a loading area. The 2020 VW Tarok Concept will start soon in Brazil, later possibly in Europe

At VW, a new SUV moves into focus. In 2017, the T-Roc launched in the compact class – a segment that lasts served only the Golf at VW. The T-Roc is to bring the old Golf variety in SUV form: 2020 is followed by a convertible variant with a fabric roof. In Brazil, a T-Roc pick-up is added.

The compact SUV with cargo area is called Tarok. VW is showing a study of the model currently at the auto show in Sao Paulo. Not much is going on until the series. Front and flank differ in many details from the donor. That should remain so in the series. Technically, he is a T-Roc.

SO, WHAT VW TAROK IS? COMPACT PICKUP WITH SUV BASE?

Without trunk, but with cargo area, the study extends into the five-meter class. That means a surcharge of almost 80 centimeters over the T-Roc. Nevertheless, little usable length remains on the bunk.

VW solves this problem about the architecture. Unlike most pickups, the Tarok gets a self-supporting body and does not build on a ladder frame. Double cabin and bunk are firmly connected. This allows an extension to the front: The partition can be folded down.

VW promises that such bulky items (and up to a ton of payload) can be conveniently stowed. A similar possibility had already announced the pick-up study VW Atlas Tanoak. When Amarok the sister brand VW commercial vehicles do not work, cargo area and interior are separated here.

ENGINE SPECS

Under the hood of the study is a drive for Brazil. The Tarok’s 1.4-liter turbo gasoline engine can handle ethanol, an important fuel in South America. VW puts it out for mixing ratios of 22 to 100 percent ethanol. The engine provides 150 hp and drives on a six-speed automatic all wheels.

VW also thinks about markets outside of Brazil. A concrete hint of the manufacturer provides the same: A 150-horsepower diesel should also be on offer. That sounds very European. Presumably, we will soon see a very similar study at a local fair. Whether the Tarok actually starts in Europe will make VW dependent on the reactions.

Incidentally, the 2020 VW Tarok is far from VW’s first attempt to convert a car to a pickup truck. In Brazil, the Saveiro currently serves the same segment, but only with two doors. In Germany, once the VW Golf was the caddy. But the SUV look has not been there yet.
