The 2020 VW Touareg will be a little longer and much more digital. By definition, an off-road car is only with air suspension. First sample in VW’s largest car.
It is not the sales figures that make the Touareg so important for VW. A million cars sold in 16 years are in comparison a more manageable value-so many VW Golf are created in twelve months. But the Touareg has been driving at the top of the VW portfolio since the removal of the Phaeton. A class that does not reach the Arteon. The Touareg is the only car of the VW-brand in Europe, which is based on the group Construction kit for longitudinal motors. Technically, it moves closer to the big Audi models.
The Touareg is popular on the important Chinese market. About half of the Touareg goes into the Middle Kingdom. There he helps the reputation of the brand as well as its margin. VW looked very closely at the conception of the new model to Asia. The Wolfsburg were completely ignoring another market: in the USA the 2020 VW Touareg USA runs out. There, the Atlas replaces it, a larger, cheaper SUV with three rows of seats.
2020 VW Touareg Interior – Giant Display
For the change of model on Generation 3, the Touareg is mainly digital. It sits in the interior of all the smaller cars of the brand. In the best case (“discover premium”) sits a touchscreen with 15-inch diagonal and curved display in the dashboard. The instruments are displayed on another 12-inch monitor. In addition, there is a head-up display that projects the traffic data onto the windscreen.
The control system runs mainly over touches. The large screen can be personalised. If you have become accustomed and everything is set, it can be operated logically. An edge under the display stabilizes the fingers as you type. Gesture control is also available, but it is rather gimmicky than useful. Strange: The Voice control cannot access the climate functions. In other cars on the same platform, it goes.
For this, infotainment gets access to the Internet. It remembers routed routes, avoids congestion and displays 3d models of the environment. Smartphones connect via Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay or Android car. Compatible devices charge inductively. Thus the Touareg finally comes to the current technical level.
Buttons fall largely away in this stage of expansion. The center console has two wheels for the driving programs and a volume control, as well as the buttons on the steering wheel. In the basic version, the air conditioner gets manual controls. The infotainment screen then only measures 9.2 inches in the diagonal, and there are also classical round instruments.
“Modern interior and more space than before”
Compared with its predecessors, the 2020 VW Touareg interior is much more modern and prettier. Below the black display panel sits a decorative strip of real wood or metal. Up to here everything works high quality and great workmanship. However, VW uses hard plastic. You don’t see it – it feels cheap and doesn’t fit into the targeted class of the Touareg.
For the first time massage seats are available at the front of the Touareg. They stamp hydraulic counterpoints on the back of the driver and the passenger. In the rear there is a lot of space at the knees and upwards. The rear seat can be moved by 16 centimeters, the backrest leaning in three steps. The trunk loads up to 810 litres of luggage-113 litres more than before.
For the additional room the Touareg has to stretch. It grows by almost 8 centimeters to a total of 4.88 meters in length. In addition, it will be almost two meters wide in the new generation with no external mirrors. Thus, it continues to rank below the Audi Q7 (5.05 m) and on a level with the Porsche Cayenne (4,92 m).
New assistance systems are used with the model change. They help to keep distance and track, brakes before and after accidents, warn of cross traffic, shunt trailers, park the SUV independently and recognize traffic signs as well as tired drivers. A traffic jam assistant with Level 3 autonomy follows as soon as it is approved.
An extended track assistant recognizes yellow road markings and beacons or pylons in sites. It is intended to simplify driving on narrow tracks in a wide car. Autonomous lane changes like in BMW 5 series and Mercedes E-Class will only follow the facelift. LED lamps are available as standard in the Touareg, with matrix light at an additional cost. The latter dominates the state Road, highway, terrain and bad weather modes. In addition, the lighting can save traffic signs so that they do not dazzle.
2020 VW Touareg Engine Specs & Trims
Under the plate of the Touareg is the same layout as before. The motor sits longitudinally in front of the front axle, the gearbox behind it. As standard, all-wheel drive and an eight-Wandlerautomatik. All the drives offered in Germany can draw trailers with 3.5 tonnes (up to 8 percent slope). The trailer clutch drives electrically and supports bicycle carriers with up to four wheels.
In the home market, the Touareg 3 starts with two V6 diesel engines. Later, a V6 gasoline engine and a V8 diesel will follow. In addition, VW promises a plug-in hybrid. In China, the Touareg GTE gets a four-cylinder with Elektrounterstützung and 367 PS system performance.
All engines in the Touareg meet the emissions standard Euro 6d-temp. Gasoline engines have a particulate filter as standard, and Diesel also has an NOx Storage Catalyst and AdBlue injection. According to current status, there are no restrictions in inner cities for the Touareg 3.

The center differential of the four-wheel drive distributes up to 70 percent of the force to the front axle or up to 80 percent backwards. A terrain version with a reduction and locking as with the predecessors will no longer exist in the new Touareg, the installation rate was too low. Generation 3 regulates brake intervention.
2020 VW Touareg be a Crossover Model
The Touareg still remains an SUV. At least if it is equipped with the optional air suspension. At the highest level, the maximum possible ramp angle is 25 degrees. For the classification as an off-road vehicle at the Federal Motor Transport Office 20 degrees are required. With the standard steel chassis, the ramp angle is 18.5 degrees. The slope angles at the front and rear are 25 or 31 degrees depending on the chassis.
VW also optionally installs a rear axle as well as an electronic roll stabilization. The latter works with electric motors in the stabilizers. They will puncture the rodis against the inclination direction and thus keep the construction straight. The Hinterachslenkung reduces the turning circle at a slow pace (from 12.2 to 11.2 meters) and increases stability during a fast ride. How exactly the chassis works, we have already experienced in the acceptance ride.
2020 VW Touareg Release Date and Price
The new Touareg 2020 will start in Europe in the middle of 2018. Concrete prices are not yet known. Generation 3 is expected to be slightly more expensive than the predecessor (currently 54,700 Euro). We expect a basic price of fewer than 60,000 euros with a better basic equipment. In the course of the day VW wants to give exact figures. We will then complement them.
