Well, maybe we exaggerated a bit. Of course, the 2020 Audi E-Tron feels in many respects after Audi. He looks, smells and sits like an Audi SUV. Much of it is known from other Audi models, especially the operation. But he drives very differently.
On the one hand, this is because the E-Tron drives purely electrically. There will not be a gas burner, but: one electric motor per axle, with a large battery in between. This is new at Audi, previously plug-in hybrids were the most electric in the range from Ingolstadt. Now there is a pure Stromer.
But much more amazing is how the E-Tron moves. Because he does not come with the firmly designed, heavy Audi nose. But with an even weight distribution, with a rear-heavy drive and a completely deactivateable ESP. At this point is already betrayed: Yes, he drifts. If it is supposed to, he even goes fucking across.
Of course, you do not need these skills in a car that suits families (not RS, M or AMG). But something had to do Audi. , Tesla has years ahead in the market, Jaguar at least months. So the pure existence of an electric Audi is not enough. He has to be able to do things better and to do things differently. Tesla shines with insane acceleration values, its own charging network, and its pioneering status. Audi has to dive into details to be a pioneer. The E-Tron is “the first electric car that …” well, does a lot of things.
On the one hand, there is the thing with the ESP (and the drift *). Then the highest charging power in the segment (150 kW), clever cooling of the entire drive and a hitherto unique braking system. The E-Tron recuperates even when the driver uses the footbrake. So comfortable other manufacturers do not solve this detail. You can see in many places: Audi has the experience of the competition, to avoid even mistakes.

It follows that the E-Tron does not blindly follow the market. On an acceleration duel with Tesla, Jaguar or Mercedes EQC he does not enter. He is too weak, too heavy and wrong tuned – in that order. His engines do not rattle brutally on the axles when starting off. On the first few meters, they always pay attention to the traction, only then comes more juice.
You still feel the typical electric car characteristics. Power (depending on the ground) from the first moment, accompanied by a whirring. For eight seconds he sprints in the overboost with 300 kW, then for about one minute with 265 kW. The continuous power is a good 100 kW, enough to hold the top speed of 200 km / h. To pace 100 passes 5.7 (boost) to 6.6 seconds (265 kW).
No peak in the segment, especially Tesla is much faster. Instead, Audi relies on constancy: Water cooling in the rotor of the electric motor quickly restores peak and maximum power. From the throttling, you might feel nothing to little in everyday life. Not even if you connect a trailer. The E-Tron is allowed to pull up to 1.8 tons.
In the 2020 Audi E-Tron Quattro, heavyweight meets a low center of gravity. His power makes him straight ahead fast, the power distribution reaches that in the curves. On this side of his limit, he lets himself be precisely circled. By braking, more torque arrives at the outer wheels and pushes it around the kink. Despite length and weight, he wags relaxed through the slalom.
Depending on the driving mode, the Audi E-Tron drives solid to crisp. Who turns off the traction control in the sports program, can let the tail slip easily with a gas shock from the track. If necessary, a small residual torque on the front axle pulls the car straight again. If not, he drifts. Depending on the ambition even with a considerable angle.
Admittedly, to demonstrate his wild side, the E-Tron was traveling on a salt lake. When sliding, it feels like snowy snow. It will be harder on asphalt. With up to 5,800 Newton-meters torque on the wheels but it should be possible.
Back to normal driving. E-Tron pilots should get used as little as possible. Therefore, initially only delay the electric motors when using the foot brake. They gain electricity. Only with heavy braking (more than 0.3 g) rub the brake pads on the discs. Before, the brake is mechanically decoupled.
Inside, the E-Tron is based on the current sedans. The only difference: Audi offers the optional virtual rearview mirror. Outside, a camera is filming, inside displays in the door panels show the pictures. A small advantage in air resistance, however, requires a lot of habituation – you look out of habit on the cameras, not on the monitors. With the elbow at the edge of the window, the wrist conceals the display.
Aerodynamics are important in the E-Tron because electric cars like the E-Tron have a range. Audi ideally notes a cW of 0.28 (to multiply by a huge face). On long stretches, the slim, digital mirror replacement should actually make noticeable. The surcharge (so far unknown) will hardly offset the benefits.
At some point, the battery is definitely empty, regardless of the mirror housing. Audi estimates the range of the E-Tron with more than 400 kilometers. Then you can not get around for longer breaks. But the E-Tron should load faster than other electric cars. Audi states that the E-Tron 150 kW charging power can hold up to a battery level of more than 80 percent. The competition in tests earlier down, because the battery is too warm. In practice, the electric SUV would soon be ready for use again.

The weaknesses of electromobility Audi could not magic away: The E-Tron is heavy (just under 2.5 tonnes), expensive (from 79,900 euros) and on long distances not as practical as a diesel. But he is quiet, modern and packed with good ideas. Some things he can even better than known sizes in the market. In his segment, he belongs to equipment-adjusted to the cheap cars.
Audi wants to build the electric SUV quickly in large quantities. The entire plant in Brussels only cares about the E-Tron, more than 10,000 pre-orders have already been received. The pouch cells for the battery come from LG, the installation of the battery takes over Audi.
The 2020 Audi E-Tron comes as standard with a large navigation system with online functions and digital instruments, chargers with 11 kW (AC) or 150 kW (DC), two-zone climate control, 19 inches, and one air suspension. Optionally, there are 22 kW charging power (AC), virtual exterior mirrors, a second charging plug on the front passenger side and a trailer hitch. In addition, Audi offers a charging card that works for most of the charging station providers. In the long term, the E-Tron takes over the payment.
