New Hyundai NEXO 2020; Hydrogen SUV Price, Redesign & Availability

Tuesday, January 15th, 2019 - Hyundai

this is Hyundai NEXO 2020, the best hydrogen SUV in the world so far. available in the showroom later this year, is it worth buying?

It tastes a bit like a breakthrough: Hyundai’s Fuel cell SUV Nexo convinces with everyday suitability, a lot of equipment and intelligent details. Driving report.

from Schmuddelkind to the model boy: Just a few years ago, Hyundai-Kia lagged behind the CO2 targets. They helped with tricks: electric cars were admitted to hundreds in the EU, but then sold to Norway. Today, the Koreans have a respectable range of hybrid and electric vehicles. And will probably make a big contribution to the democratization of these technologies with Ioniq, Kona Elektro, and Co.

In the future, this could also apply to the hydrogen drive, which may have the best prospects in terms of long-haul suitability, comfort, and environmental friendliness. Hyundai is proud to be the “European leader in fuel cell technology”.

Hyundai NEXO 2020 first glance: refreshingly ordinary

What will not harm the Nexo: Although an exotic technique drives him, the first is a refreshingly ordinary SUV. E-Cars tend to be the futuristic-closed front. A fuel cell needs oxygen and not a little of it. So the Nexo wears an eye-catching grill as if it were an ordinary diesel SUV.

2020 Hyundai Nexo Battery Range

The fact that this is not the case shows many elaborate details. Thus, the D-pillar is streamed from the wind, and the aerodynamics are optimized on the front. Tesla-moderately electrically retractable door handles supposedly also only serve the aerodynamics, but make something. With 4.67 meters of outside length, the Hyundai NEXO 2020 is located between Hyundai Tucson (4.48 m) and Hyundai Santa Fe (4.77 m) and competes with the space offering with mid-range SUV.

Hyundai NEXO 2020 Interior; Between Airbus and HiFi system

A bit of a future look splurged the Koreans are consciously also in the interior. The wide center console can be no more than any other center console but is visually arranged somewhere between airplane cockpit, Porsche and Eighties hifi system. Stupid or cool? Taste.

The Koreans have no doubts about the quality of the processing. However, the selected materials are sometimes cheaper than they look. such as the rotating aperture made of thin plastic, which simulates brushed metal. Bottom line: Class-appropriate with a high touch. According to Hyundai, 11 percent of the interior is made of an ecologically degradable material such as bamboo and sugar cane. All leather parts are available in Vegan imitation leather version.

Drive Test; Colder and more durable

Enough, an interior has every car – a hydrogen drive does not. In the huge Hyundai group, one has the competence for the technology itself and is so less dependent on external suppliers, one emphasizes. The fuel cell uses its current to feed the motor directly or the 1.56 kWh large battery as required. Its primary function is to ensure that the 120 kW power of the electric motor is always available. The fuel cell itself provides a maximum of 95 kW.

With an efficiency of 60 percent, the fuel cell system works much more efficiently than in the predecessor. More efficient than an internal combustion engine anyway, says Hyundai. Cold starts are now to succeed even at minus 30 degrees, and the durability of their fuel cell, the Koreans trust 10 years or 160,000 kilometers long over the way.

The three hydrogen tanks consist of a Carbongemisch and hold 6.33 kilograms or 156.6 liters of fuel. This is enough in the realistic WLTP cycle for devilish 666 kilometers of range. Eye level with commercial gasoline so, as well as refueling in less than five minutes. However, this also applies to the cost of fuel: at just under 10 euros for a kilo of hydrogen, the tank filling currently costs around 60 euros. Hydrogen is still not for thrifty foxes, this is not only true for the vehicle price.

The Hyundai NEXO 2020 is very similar to an electric car, only a slight noise indicates the much more complex drive technology. However: with 163 hp, the empty well 1.8 tons of heavy SUV is anything but overpowered. Many electric cars convey a little more driving pleasure if one understands above all “performance”. Otherwise, there is nothing to criticize about the driving behavior: the Hyundai Nexo steers precisely, brakes neatly and springs full and comfortable. Predicate: Suitable for the long-haul. If you know where the fuel pumps are.

Hyundai NEXO 2020 Special Features; The best blind spot assistant in the industry

What was important to the Koreans: the Hyundai Nexo should not only focus on the drive to the front. Therefore, the SUV receives an armada of assistance and security systems, with the exception of the self-employed overtaking the current state of level 2 autonomy. With few changes, the Nexo with this sensor technology in Korea has already driven fully autonomously, says Hyundai. In particular, the lane keeping assistants have tuned the Hyundai engineers well. The steering movements are gentle but determined and keep the car safely in the middle of the track. Only on roads with a missing center line, the driver must occasionally override the helper.

Particularly impressive: The Nexo can park independently on the wheel without a driver. This is the case with Mercedes and BMW from the upper middle class upwards. Much more simple, but just as spectacular: The blind spot is captured by the Nexo when driving with one camera on the right and left. When the indicator is activated, a rear view of the adjacent roadway is displayed on the instrument panel. At first glance, it may be dispensable, at second glance: the best blind spot-assistant on the market.

Good: Nothing in the Nexo manages to be exotic. He uses himself as intuitively and self-explanatory as any other Hyundai. As in newer Mercedes models, the digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch screen for navigation visually form a cohesive unit, in the animated hydrogen tank blubbering digital bubbles.

The shift paddles on the steering wheel control the strength of the braking energy recovery (recuperation). The mobile phone charging bowl placed the designers under the free-floating center console – while driving there is not a very good approach. Neither should one, the Nexo dominates all common Konnektivitätsstandards.

The best places in the Nexo are not at the front but in the back. On the rear seat, the SUV has a lot of space in all directions, even upwards – although two out of three hydrogen tanks are under the seat. The third limits the trunk volume to an ordinary 461 liter. Under the cargo floor, there is only a tiny stowage compartment.

Price and availability; Pretty expensive for a mid-range SUV

How much is the fun? This is, exceptionally, not the crucial question. Driving with hydrogen is not yet expected. Not financially and not ecologically – since the fueled hydrogen is mostly still produced from natural gas under high energy consumption. With 69,000 euros, the Hyundai Nexo is much cheaper than the Toyota Mirai (78,600 euro) and is also much more luxuriously equipped. The only option next to a matt Varnish is the “premium package” for 3,500 euro surcharge. It includes a Krell sound system, a 360-degree monitor, 19-inch rims, a panoramic roof as well as heated and ventilated seats.

The net price of 57,983 euros qualifies the hydrogen SUV for the environmental premium, so it may be deducted once again at 4,000 euros. Who wants can lease the NEXO for 550 euros per month.

In addition, there is no need for wide directions when ordering or servicing. Almost every Hyundai dealer can order the model and is also designed to perform the maintenance, says Schrick. As is customary with Hyundai, five years of car warranty and an eight-year warranty on the battery should make the decision easier. However, this will not help the Nexo for the time being. Pioneers have a hard-on.
