Volvo XC40 VS BMW X1 2018; Price and Specs Comparison
Volvo is offering a compact SUV for the first time. The XC40 has what it takes to become a bestseller-if it is a good offer. We have compared the prices with those of the BMW X1.
XC90, V90 and S90, most recently the new XC60 and now also the XC40-Volvo regularly brings new models that seem to be arriving well. and penetrates deeper into the so-called premium segment. The small BMW SUV is still quite fresh on the market. The dimensions are both almost on par. The comparable petrol xDrive25i (231 hp) costs from 44,300 Euro, the 190-PS diesel xDrive20d starts at 41,450 Euro.
Volvo equips the XC40 for the slightly cheaper base price with numerous assistance systems: attention detectors, emergency brakes for city traffic, active track holders, fixed brake automatics, traffic sign detection and some other helpers are standard.
BMW offers less in the base. The track holder with steering is not available, the city emergency brake does not recognize pedestrians or animals. For 650 Euro There is the driving assistant, which brings a Spurverlassenswarner and pedestrian recognition as well as automatic beams into the car. For a total of 1,400 euros more (driving assistant plus), the X1 steers itself, keeps the distance to the foreman and assists in traffic jams.
At Volvo, the package is called Adaptive Cruise and Jam Wizard Intellisafe Pro. The XC40 is not available as standard, it costs 1,600 euros. The XC40 also warns against rear traffic during parking and helps to minimise damage in the event of a rear collision. The X1 can’t even do that at an extra charge. In the XC40 there is, therefore, more security for a total of less money.
Volvo XC40 d4 AWD v BMW X1 XDRIVE20D
In infotainment, Volvo also makes a good case. The standard is a 9-inch screen with Bluetooth, audio streaming, and USB. BMW also has but offers only a smaller 6.5-inch display. The manual air conditioning is standard for both. LED headlights only at Volvo, BMW requires 990 euros. Turn-off light is then included, with Volvo 540 euro due.
In the base, Volvo with the T3 is usually a good piece under the BMW X1. The four-wheel diesel changes the picture: 44,800 Euro wants to have Volvo for the D4 AWD. The BMW X1 xDrive20d, also 190 hp and 400 Newton-meter strong, is available from 41,450 euro in the price list. However, with less equipment. Eight-way automatic and four-wheel drive are as standard as the XC40. But Volvo’s SUV is only available as D4 from the momentum equipment.

If you want to bring the X1 to a similar level, you should choose the sport-line or the xLine-equipment, which is distinguished mainly by optical details. Then the 20d will cost 46,000 or 46,250 euros. 18-inch, parking aid rear, 2-zone climate control, cruise control, automatic tailgate and LED headlights with turning light are the most important additional features.
Leather seats are not included, the XLine has only part leather. Fully leather costs seats 1,590 euro (sport line) or 1,000 euro (xLine). The lumbar allows BMW to pay 280 euros, the seat heating with 330 euros. Infotainment comes standard with six loudspeakers. However, there is a larger screen for the big Navi, including a head-up display for 2,890 euros.
Those who renounce the system and instead “only” choose the preparation for Apple Carplay (300 euro) are with the BMW X1 xDrive20d at just under 50,500 euros. At XC40 d4 AWD, we land with the similar configuration at just over 48,000 euros. Despite more extensive safety equipment.
